benghazi. more from tripoli this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. officials have arrested suspects and they have several more under surveillance across the eastern part of the country, but they are not shedding any light as to who these individuals are and what role they may have played in the deadly atta. what we do know is according to libyan officials some of these individuals have been taken into custody after footage emerged at the protest which officials here say was essentially the cover that was exploited by militant groups. they are convinced so far that this was not simple police an outburst or a spontaneous outburst of anger against an anti-islamic film that appeared in the u.s., but rather a coordinated planned attack that way exploited by militant groups perhaps affiliated with al qaeda in the eastern part of libya. >> all right. that report from tripoli this morning with the latest.

thank you. it's 7:03. here's david. thank you. the violent anti-american demonstrations are not letting up in cairo this morning. nbc correspondent richard engel is there. richard, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, david. big protests that had been called for here in tahrir square this morning have been cancelled. instead, islamic parties say they are only holding symbolic demonstrations against that film that was just being talked about, the film that's caused so much controversy. you can see behind me very small crowds here in tahrir square but the situation right in front of the u.s. embassy just off this square remains tense. for a third straight day the u.s. embassy in cairo is under siege. morning, protesters threw stones and molotov cocktails at riot police who struggled to keep them back with tear gas and stones of their own. the demonstrations are small,

but violent and determined. since yesterday they haven't left the streets around the embassy for a minute, retreating and then charging back. throughout the afternoon, middle of the night and into this morning. the protesters are, by now, a mix of islamic hardliners and soaker hooligans, both with a goal of taking vengeance on the embassy for an anti-islam internet movie made in the united states that washington has publicly and repeatedly denounced. >> the united states government had absolutely nothing to do with this video. we absolutely reject its content and message. >> reporter: the protesters aren't listening to that. authorities in cairo are erecting n walls around the embassy to prevent mobs from getting close, evidence in concrete of the growing divide between washington, cairo and

beyond. there have been demonstrations against the offensive video in 11 countries so far. half of them in places where washington supported arab spring uprisings that toppled strong men who had formerly been u.s. allies. the arab spring has taken a dark turn. in yemen on thursday, protesters managed to break into the parking lot of the embassy in sanaa, destroying vehicles, smashing windows and even using a forklift to do more damage. no embassy staff was hurt. entering this volatile region now, the pope, leaving rome today for a previously scheduled visit to lebanon. so far there hasn't been any violence there. but today is friday, the muslim holy day of prayer. more protests have been called for. you do get a sense, david, that the egyptian people and the egyptian government are growing increasingly intolerant of these

small violent clashes in front of the u.s. embassy. the egyptian president again and perhaps in his strongest terms yet called on people to protect all diplomatic facilities in this country. david? >> richard engel in cairo this morning, richard, thanks very much. 7:06 and here again is savannah. thank you. the bodies of four americans killed in benghazi are being flown back to the u.s. as some of their relatives speak out about the victims for the first time. 52-year-old ambassador chris stevens died as extremists attacked the u.s. consulate in benghazi. stevens will be remembered not just for his courage but also for his hope for lippia, his passion for the region so strong, his family said it outweighed any fear he had of being there. >> he's been in these countries for so long that i haven't really reflected about how dangerous the work that he was doing actually was. he was so focused on, you know, the joyous times on his diplomatic mission. he didn't even go in to really

talking too much about how afraid he was, you know, for his life. >> while senator john mccain praised stevens as a dedicated diplomat hillary stevens remembers her big brother in a more personal way. >> he had a great sense of humor. always a jokester. >> sean smith, an air force veteran joined the state department a decade ago with assignments in baghdad, pre-toria, montreal and the hague, he was on temporary duty in libya working as an information management officer. he leaves behind his wife heather and two young children. the attacks also killed two former navy s.e.a.l.s, tyrone woods and glen doherty, both working as contract workers. thursday mourners filed in all day at his mother's home in massachusetts. his sister kate quigley remembered glen. >> he lived life to the fullest, and if you asked his friends he was their brother as well. >> for two decades tyrone roads

took on america's toughest military tasks as a navy s.e.a.l. with multiple assignments in iraq and afghanistan. 41 years old, woods was a father to due teenage boys, his family described him as someone who loved life, loved adrenaline. all four were killed in the line of duty and in duty to their nation. >> this led to fresh jabs on the presidential campaign trail. nbc's peter alexander is here with that part of the story. this is for the first time becoming a major flashpoint between the president and governor romney. >> a largely dormant campaign issue. with the ongoing turmoil in the middle east and the political fallout at home, poet president barack obama and mitt romney are trying to project strength on national security, but less than eight weeks till election day romney, who by the way authored a book titled "no apologies" is making no apologies for his sharp cricism of the president's foreign policy. while in virginia mitt romney

toned down his attacks on president obama seeking to project strength in more subtle terms, arguing the president is a weak leader. >> sometimes it seems that we're at the mercy of events instead of shaping events. the world needs american leadership. the middle east needs american leadership. >> reporter: demonstrating the bitterness on both sides, romney was briefly interrupted by a heckler. >> why are you politicizing libya? >> reporter: >> reporter: campaigning in colorado president obama took a firm stance reminding voters of his power as commander in chief. >> i want people around me to hear me, to all those who would do us harm. no act of terror will go unpunished. it will not dim the light of the values that we proudly present to the rest of the world. >> reporter: on tuesday romney blasted the administration for a statement from the u.s. embassy in cairo that romney said was akin to an apology showing

sympathy for the attackers prompting this from the president in a telemundo interview about his opponent. >> i have observed that there's a tendency to shoot before you aim, as i've pointed out. >> reporter: on thursday romney responded on abc news. >> what i said was exactly the same conclusion the white house reached which was that the statement was inappropriate. that's why they backed away from it. >> reporter: romney, who has been trailing in the polls among women, made them a major focus on thursday surrounded by women on stage. he hammered away at what he calls the president's economic failures. >> we talked about where he wants to get but not how to get there. we've watched him for the last four years, and what he has done has not helped. >> reporter: meanwhile, the president tried to gently contrast his background from his opponent. >> let's face it. you know, a mixed kid from hawaii born to a single mom is not likely to become president of the united states, but in america it can happen. >> it's not hard to figure out

which states these campaigns think will decide the election. romney in florida wednesday, virginia thursday and today he heads back to the battleground of ohio. it's familiar territory for both romney and the president. david, they have been there a combined 14 times since june, seven for romney, seven for the president. >> this is all important ohio. peter alexander, thanks very much. chuck todd is nbc's political director and chief white house correspondent, joins from us our newsroom in washington. chuck, good morning. >> good morning, david. >> let's start with foreign policy. look, how does this play? governor romney goes on attack in the middle of this crisis. was it political opportunism that is to his detriment or an appropriate opportunity to really separate himself from the president on foreign policy? >> well, i think at this point whether they can't have the timing issue back, right, this question did they go too soon, did they criticize too soon, there's certainly a debate inside, amongst some romney supporters about whether it was appropriate or not, but it

doesn't matter now. the romney campaign believes there is an opportunity here, and there's a couple of things to keep an eye on here. first of all, if you saw this morning in the "washington post," a whole bunch of romney foreign policy advisers who drew a bright line this morning, david, and they said this would not have happened on a president romney's watch which, of course, you've got the obama campaign pretty fired up and pretty upset about that, but one thing to look for in the next couple of weeks, a major foreign policy speech from romney. i think they feel like it's an opportunity, and at this point they do need to flesh this out and that they will get a lot of attention for it when they do it. >> a lot is about the context of the race. new polling out from the battleground states, take us through this including advantage the president when it comes to ohio. >> the big three states, ohio, virginia, florida. we've got new data. all of the polls were conducted sunday through tuesday before the flare-ups in the middle east, before all of that, but look at these advantages for the president. he hits 49% or 50 in all three

states. in ohio his lead is up to seven points. hits the 50% mark, both in florida and virginia, 49-44. the bigticaway is the right track, wrong track numbers in these states. all of the right track numbers went over 40% for the first time that we've been tracking, right direction, wrong direction, where is the country headed, lingering in the low 30s. i've talked to some democrats. they think this is the bill clinton bump. that convention speech he made which was the whole idea that, hey, this is where the country is. maybe it's more on the right track than you think, that may be the most northern bump from the convention. >> and that right track, wrong track, the big indicator where independent voters are. we'll keep a close eye on that. chuck todd, thank you very much. much more on this polling and the flashpoint over foreign policy when we join you for "meet the press" on sunday. we'll have a special hour on that. >> david, thanks. let's get a check of the top stories. natalie morales over at the news desk. good morning. >> thank you.

york stock exchange. good morning, mandy. >> reporter: good morning. not so much pain for your 401(k) these works. u.s. stock markets are sitting at multi-year highs after the central bank unleashed another move to help the economy. the u.s. dollar has fallen back a number of currencies and a bit more expensive to take the overseas trip. and gasoline prices in terms of the national average more expensive than a week ago and month ago at 3.87 and we hope in future weeks will come down. >> mandy drury at the new york stock exchange, thanks. a brazen burglary caught on tape at a california apple store where a group of suspected robbers slam a bmw through the store's glass doors. a man then jumps from the car and begins scooping up as many devised as he can before the car makes its getaway. unfortunately for the would-be robbers the car's license plate fell off, not a smart move, remained there at the scene leading police right to one

by others. nbc's craig melvin has the latest on this story. craig, good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. barring some sort of last-ditch legal effort this will essentially be contraband here in new york city. that's because the board of health has approved that controversial plan by the mayor to ban the sale of large sugary drinks. they claim it will save lives. others say they want the government to keep its hands off its big sodas. now the whole thing could get settled by a lawsuit. in his ongoing battle against the bulge, mayor michael bloomberg has landed another blow. >> we've taken bold action in new york city because obesity is a national epidemic that's getting worse, and we're not just going to wring our hands about it. >> reporter: in an 8-0 vote the city council approved the mayor's proposed plan prohibiting 16-ounce drinks or larger. this ban affects restaurants, food carts, delis, stadiums,

arenas, broadway and movie thesers. >> it's about choice. it's about your right to make a decision in your life. >> reporter: many consider bloomberg's war on waistlines an assault on personal freedom. his may announcement about the plan prompted summer protests. >> i'm here to tell mayor bloomberg to mind his own business. >> reporter: and late-night mockery. >> i think this is less than 16 ounces, better safe than sorry. >> reporter: public opinion seems to be strongly against the ban. 68% who responded to this today.com survey think it's a bad idea. >> i think it's stupid. i really honestly do. i think it's completely unnecessary. >> i know that they are trying to say it's going to cut back on obesity, but honestly, people can make their own decisions. >> i don't think it's the mayor's place to make decisions for people about what they are going to ingest. >> reporter: but the mayor and many health experts don't think it's a coincidence our guts have grown as available drink sizes have gone from 6.5 ounces in the '20s to this.

while bloomberg insists the ban will prevent roughly 6,000 obesity-related deaths in the city alone health experts also say it's to make people think. >> it's a way for people to be mindful and see and pay attention to what they are drinking. >> like do i need all of this because i'm not going to drink all of this, does anybody really drink all of, this one person? i mean, if you do, that's a lot of soda >> reporter: ban is set to take place in march but the restaurants and soft drink industry are considering legal action to stop it. >> you can't go to your loved ones to the movie theater to buy a soda, no impact on obesity, won't impact public health at all, lessen the lines at the theaters and not the wastelines of our patrons. >> reporter: the ban here could have national implications, savannah. over the past ten years new york city has banned the use of art fashl trans fats and banned smoking in bars and restaurant and also forced chain restaurants to put calories on

as the couple made their first ever visit to a mosque, word that a french magazine had published topless photos of kate from the couple's recent holiday at a private home in the south of france. the palace spokesman describes the pair as, quote, hugely saddened, to have their privacy invaded in such a grotesque and totally unjustifiable manner, end quote. friday's official response from st. james palace says, quote, the incident is reminiscent of the worst excesses of the press and paparazzi during the life of diana, princess of wales, and all the more upsetting to the duke and duchess for being so. a clear aleutiillusion of the df princess diana. while the driver of the car found later to be intoxicated, the death incensed the world. prince william devastated by his mother's death and troubled by

the intensity of media scrutiny reportedly hoped to shield his wife from the darker side of life lived in public. >> you have to remember, he was 15 years old sadly when his mother died. even though this is a long lens photo opportunity, as they call, it it's still real invasion of privacy, and for him, of course, will bring back and trigger memories of his late mother, princess diana. >> the spotlight also shown recently on william's brother, prince harry, caught frolicking in a las vegas hotel room, but news of these photos comes as kate had been basking in the glow of rave reviews for her sterling performance during this, only her second overseas tour as a duchess, and just 24 hours after her heralded first speech on the international stage. >> thank you. >> a somber farewell to kuala lumpur as the duke and duchess headed to the rain forests of borneo. those at the palace say the couple had every expectation of

privacy at the remote house where they were staying and saying officials are considering what the couple's legal options might be. meantime, they say the duke and duchess have their focus firmly on the tour. david? >> thank you very much this morning. martin bashir is the host of "the martin bashir show." good morning. >> good morning, david. >> 15 years after the death of princess diana. were you surprised that this has happened? >> no, not at all. it's a terribly abysmal echo of what happened to william's mother. she was pursued relentlessly, as you know. william maintains that the paparazzi played a role in his mother's death. though nobody was actually prosecuted for that, and i think that this is inevitable because people have assumed that it's the british press who pursue the royal family with the greatest aggression, but in fact it's press all around the world that cover the royal family, and that's the issue. >> the expectation of privacy is also the issue and whether that

is at some level naive for any royal in this media environment, in this case she was at a private villa that was pretty remote. >> and the french have far more strict privacy laws than the british or the americans do. so they assume that, but you can't assume anything if you're a member of the royal family. >> it was striking to hear the royal family laid down such a very strong statement in reaction. >> unprecedented. >> unprecedented. do you think they might take legal action. is there some precedent for that? >> i don't think they will, because i think the issue is that it's in a different jurisdiction, not in the united kingdom, as i've said, and it will only in some ways make the situation play out longer than it needs to. i think the statement was aggressive because they want to assert the privacy of this couple. they were, after all, on holiday. it was just before this important world tour. princess catherine was delivering her first public speech and they had every reason to believe they would be given

prif >> i there's context of this, where prince harry most recently caught up in las vegas where he was photographed, pictures partially nude. is there a level of damage control going on now within the royal family to sort of deal with this and at least caution this new generation? >> i think that they have already worked very, very hard with each member of the royal family. i think the wedding of william and catherine was in some ways as late as it was because everybody knew that they had a relationship that was ongoing, partly because they were being prepared for this kind of onslaught. it's also a very different situation. remember, harry is the second in line, not the heir to the throne, and he's a single man. it's a totally different set of circumstances. this was a gross invasion of privacy, everybody agrees, and i think that's what has prompted the palace and the palace spokespeople to come out so aggressively against the magazine. >> all right. martin bashir, thanks very much. good to see you. >> now we'll head outside to

>> reporter: while the new phone will come with the new charger, the problem is all of those old apple products, ipods, ipads, docking stations, car chargers won't be compatible without a $29 adapter. >> the short run, yeah, there's a little bit of a hit you might have to take if you want to use your old products with the new new phone. >> reporter: for apple and aftermarket vendors that could mean big bucks. think about it, 40 million iphone 5s are expected to be order by the end of the year. 29 buck adapter for each is almost 1.2 billion. >> any way they can get some extra money out of you, they will. >> reporter: and while experts say the technology upgrade was long overdue, it begs the question what do you do with all of those old chargers. >> reporter: we're fa >> we're facing a new era of little random white cords we find in a drawer or something. >> reporter: outdated power sources, admit it, you probably have more than a few lying around. >> i can't keep track of all the

for this move are and we shot it in 22 days. >> wow. >> the shortest movie shoot that i've done for the longest amount of preparation. we spent two or three times a week, on the streets with police officers on ride-alongs from 4:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. in the movie and did tactical training with live ammunition and we did fight training every morning, so there was a lot of preparation that went into this. >> from your point of view as an actor, why did you feel the need for that kind of intense preparation? >> well, the way the movie is shot is all from the point of view of the police officers. >> right. >> and sort of feels like a ride-along where you are in the car with them and when you go into a scenario with them, you are actually from their point of view. the whole movie was shot like that, and in order for us to get the reality of that situation, we had to prepare like that. you know, there was no other way. >> there's also the other part of the reality here that frankly a lot of communities are going through is an intense level of crime that does take it to a level of drug cartels, which is what's at play here, and is incredibly dangerous for the police and federal authorities. >> yeah. well, i think the police are the first responders. >> yeah. >> so, you know, unfortunately or fortunately, you know, for

them they are dealing with a situation that is in this case, you know, beyond their jurisdiction. they keep running into the cartel houses that they don't even know exists and, you know, get into a lot of trouble, unfortunately, and end up having to -- having to deal with the cartel as a result. >> it's also a really interesting story. you have these two realities, you know, the great night scape shots that sort of takes you, transitions you into the drama of the night, but then it's really about the bonding with your partner, and that's a real relationship that really comes through on the screen. it's funny and a real personal bond. >> thank you. >> that was also what the five months was about, me and michael pena who did the movie together, that we actually had a real friendship. the heart is inside this car. we shot all the scenes in the car in a day and a half, you know, and that's like 30% of the movie, so when you're making a move like this, you know, that i think -- the reason why i gravitate to any movie is the heart in it. >> right. >> and what it's really trying to say and it's all about friendship, what the movie is about. >> also a lot of physical training. you were pretty big for this part. did you want to keep all that

muscle? >> i spent almost every morning five days a week fighting these kids in echo park. and i got basically beaten up by, you know, 14 to 20-year-old kids every morning which is -- >> doing a video about that, which people can do that workout at home, too. >> get beat up now. >> you're going to be off broadway as well in a debut. >> yeah. >> why off broadway? tell me about this project. >> i just fell in love with this play, and it's sort of perfect size for off broadway and the story is a story about a family. it's a wonderful, beautiful story about the family and off broadway seems like a nice place to start. >> jake gyllenhaal, congratulations on both. good luck with the movie. >> thank you, man. thank you. >> looks fantastic. >> and maybe you should dab your forehead a little bit. >> i've been withering under my own questioning. >> don't dance with dogs, you know what i mean? just hang with them, have a good time, because dancing with them might not be the right way.

documentation that neuroscientists have established that there's a strong brain-vagina connection. we talk about the brain-vagina connection. there's no brain-penis connection. a disconnection. we'll wait for a man to write that book. there's understandably a brain-vagina connection such that when a woman is empowered to know about her desire, know what makes her happy, think about it and have the satisfying orgasm, she gets some really great neuro chemicals affecting her mood. she gets dopamine, and she gets opiaites, which is about joy. i've definitely interviewed a lot of women who realize when they see the signs, ost, that's w when i'm really feeling good about myself and my lover i can bring that o other aspects of my

life. >> we're all so different. every woman is completely different. as you were saying this, did you stick to any one, like a nun, who has never had sex her whole life and seems to enjoy a beautiful experience in life of service to mankind. >> oh, absolutely. >> how does that figure in? >> i'm so glad you asked that. let me stress the findings in this book. i have reader ls who are celibate, lesbian, bisexual, married. you don't have to be having sex with another person to be able to use this information to protect your own health and well being. you get it from nursing or holding a baby. you get dopamine from shopping. it's about knowing yourself better. you don't have to be in a relationship for that. you said everyone is different.
